Chapter 14: Luther Martinson

As silence reigned over the entire group, and the officer from the Hunters’ Association stood by passively, I knew that I couldn’t just stand there. Even if I didn’t want to, I had to identify myself. My name wasn’t secret, so if I didn’t do it, someone else would. I raised my hand in the air, and the officer was quick to hone in on my face.

That made me realize there was a perk to the Hunter IDs not having pictures included on them. The officer actually hadn’t been sure that I was even there.

“That would be me,” I said with a firm voice, seeing the officer reveal a small smile before hiding it away. Even from a distance, I could tell how much power was hidden away beneath that black-and-white suit. This guy had to be a higher A-Rank or a lower S-Rank at a minimum. “What do you need to know?”

“I would prefer if we took this conversation to a more… private location,” the officer said, inclining his head toward a large police truck with the sigil of the Association printed on its side. It looked like the kind of thing you’d expect a black ops commando team to hide in. “We have a small room prepared for the two of us. If you’ll follow me, Mr. Park, we can get down to brass tacks.”

I gave Jack and the others a nod as I followed the officer without saying anything else. The officer neither rushed nor lagged. He set a steady pace as we walked toward the van, and I stayed a pace or two behind him. I couldn’t help but feel the power radiating off of him. I hadn’t felt pressure like that in years; I had been at a high level for so long that I was usually the one emanating power and intimidating lower-level people.

That was why so many ordinary citizens were uncomfortable around the more powerful members of the populace. It wasn’t just that bit of jealousy that caused the emotions to stir within. No, it was the primal desire to run far away from a being or entity that you instinctively knew could end you with ease. In fact, it had been on more than one occasion that I watched ordinary people literally do just that.

“Sorry about my aura,” the officer said as we stepped into the massive truck. The container hitched to the truck had been refitted into an interrogation room, complete with a dark mirror in the back to let somebody watch without being seen. Even the small recorder on the table was perfectly standard, complete with a blinking red light the moment we sat down. The place smelled like a mix of sweat, disinfectant, and metal. I got the sense this room got used quite frequently.

“Nice setup you have here,” I said.

Luther grunted. “Protocol requires that we put up a strong front when in contact with groups of ten [Hunters] or higher to minimize the chance of surprise attacks.
